Exchange Experiences

The internship is a valuable time of the programme. Your experiences are important, not just for you, but also shared within the wider community of SRM students and alumni. Here is the space for sharing!

Tüv Süd Industrie Service GmbH, Carbon Management Service Department in München

What the org is about:

Climate change is undoubtedly a global subject that is increasingly affecting all areas of life and business. Determination of the Kyoto Treaty – and, above all with the EU Emissions Trading – have made climate change truly relevant for the European industry and energy sector. The ways in which energy is generated, distributed, stored and used are closely connected with climate change. With increased prices for the energy carriers and with new regulations the energy market is changing; renewables are becoming more important. Fur-ther more transparency in the energy market is expected.

What it's like:

Working there is like being in SRM, many international people with different languages.

Cost/payment:

Payment will vary from 300 to 500 EUR per Month, depending on your background.

IUCN USA Multilateral Office, Washington DC.

What the org is about:

The DC office is responsible for USA, the Caribbean and also Work in the international orgs located in Washington DC, N.Y.. They also do a lot of marine conservation work.

What it's like:

It's an awsome hub if you wanna get connected in the US or internationally. You can spend lots of time on meetings all around DC and talk to VIPs of the policy scene (do bring lots of business cards!). Its like a ticket to play in an arena that you have so fare only watched.

Cost/payment:

You won't get paid, but you can decide yourself what you wanna work on.
It's expensive though: Legally, you need a J1 VISA, which will cost you from 500 to 900€ and at least two months (hope Obama will simplify this…). Living in and around DC is also expensive (rent 700$, living another 700$)

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) - Sustainable Business Services, a consulting company with a sustainability department

What the company is about:

The international audit and consulting company PwC has several Sustainable Business Services departments all over the world

What it's like:

I spent 6 months working at PwC France in the french sustainability department. PwC is a big international company offering a large array of services for companies including sustainability. I started during my internship to learn the job of consultant in the sustainability field working on several projects (life cycle assessment, eco-design, audit of environmental, data benchmark on best sustainable practices). Mainly an office work with sometimes meetings with clients, audits on site of factories, interviews. A good way to learn how companies use sustainability, how to promote and sell sustainability, you can cover several topics at the same time (useful if you do not know in which field to specialize or if you do not want to specialize!). You are connected with sustainability on a national scale and with the biggest companies and organisations involved in sustainability. On the other hand, this can be really demanding and stressful job. I got a long term contract after the internship.

Cost/payment:

Usually you will receive € 1000,- per month. Working hours : 9 a.m - 6 p.m (at least during the internship :) )
